Battery Care
In winter, the heater, lights and wipers
put high demands on the car battery.
Typically a battery lasts between 2-5 years, so to prevent being left out in the cold and to extend your battery life, we advise regular maintenance, by charging the vehicle battery. This should be part of your routine car inspection such as checking oil levels, tyre pressure and that the lights are all working.

There are two types of battery chargers available; A trickle charger or a smart charger. SmartCharger represent a much safer way to charge your battery.

Ring SmartChargers utilise the latest in battery care
technology. They are easy to use, simply connect and
forget, the charger will do the rest. It will charge all types
of vehicle battery and can extend the life of a battery
by 2 to 3 years.

A trickle charger will continually send charge into a battery even though it has reached its optimum charge level. This can potentially cause overcharging of the battery, to the extent it could start to gas and so permanently damage the battery.

Ring's SmartChargers will not only safely charge all battery types and even recondition deeply discharged batteries they will not over charge a battery. The final stage of charging with a Ring SmartCharge is called the Float Mode. Once the battery has been charged to its optimum level, no more charge will be added. However the Smart Charger will stay in contact with the battery. If the battery then begins to naturally discharge, the SmartCharger will respond and charge as required.

Tips to prevent a flat battery
  • A battery left idle for a long time will naturally discharge. If not seen to the discharge will be so extensive that the battery will need to be replaced.
  • The battery terminals and connections should be cleaned. Dirt or moisture increases the rate of natural discharge
  • Traditional Lead Acid batteries should have their electrolyte checked and if needed topped up with distilled water.
  • If you know the car is not going to be used for a long time ensure that it is connected to a Ring SmartCharge that maintain the optimum charge level during this period of inactivity.
